Mary Quiros

Biography 2008

Mary is a native of Laredo, Texas, a border community with Mexico, her own heritage and the vibrant colors of this unique culture explode in her work. In 1977, after painting in oils and acrylics for 7 years, Mary found fluidity of expression in watercolor. Though she often mixes other media, she states that there is such a harmony between watercolor and the creative process, that it is a joy to work with it. Mary’s eyes are her art. She draws from the small blossom, the obscure window and the silence of a silhouette. The observer finds a lively, energetic color that is most unusual in the watercolor medium.

Mary’s watercolors have been accepted in Texas, Colorado, South Carolina, Missouri and Kansas. She also had the opportunity to show one of her watercolor pieces at the Contemporary Museum of Modern Art in Nigata, Japan, and received the Award of Excellence. She was featured in the Texas Watercolor Society publication “Fifty Years of Excellence” and the summer edition of Watercolor Magazine, both 1999 editions. The Laredo Center for the Arts exhibited her works in a “one woman” show in 1998, 2002, 2004, and 2007. In 2003, Mary was juried into the 13th edition of the “Encyclopedia of Living Artists” in America and in 2005 the 14th Edition of Living Artists. Another work, “Mariposas” was published in a North Light Book for artists entitled “Splash 8”. View her work at www.southernwatercolorsociety.org

Artist Statement

Painting on a daily basis has become almost a necessity. Having studied with various masters, I have learned to trust inspiration, whether it comes from what I see, feel and/or believe. In reality, most of my creative journeys come from within, touching on the thoughts and experiences of a lifetime.

Water media, for me has endless possibilities and gives me a repertoire of methods of interpretation.  I believe in starting with strong design fundamentals and experimenting with ink, wash, collage and dry brush. Pushing the limits of color in water media is integral to my work. Understanding the “negative space” of my painting and experimenting with vibrant, earthy, and intense color has given me plenty of flexibility in the creative process each time I approach a blank page.
